"As a Venturer, I promise to do my duty to God and help strengthen America, to help others, and to seek truth, fairness, and adventure in our world." - Venturing Oath

Highlights from 2007/2008

(27 OCT 07) - Our First Open House

The McNairy County rescue squad attends our first open house activity. They were kind enough to send our two volunteer fireman / EMTs with their extrication vehicle for display. This was the crew's first official activity and recruiting drive. We are always looking for new friends to join our team!

(27 OCT 07) - Our First Open House

K-9 Handlers from the Bolivar area brought in search dogs for the activity. They explained how dog tracking works and performed a demonstration search - the dog tracked right to our simulated victim.

(2 MAY 08) - Water Safety Training

Crew lifeguards conduct Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense Training in a classroom at Freed-Hardeman University. All youth and adults maintain BSA required safety training to allow rapid response to any type of search and rescue mission.

(2 MAY 08) - BSA Swim Test

Crew lifeguards administer the BSA swim test at the Freed-Hardeman pool in preparation for the 101 mile Tennessee River canoe trip. All had a great time in the water after the "stress" of passing the test with a "swimmer" designation was over. After, the lifeguards assigned canoe / swim buddies so that each canoe had a strong swimmer in case of a capsized craft.

(2 MAY 08) - Basic Canoe Handling Training

While already wet the crew slipped a canoe into the pool to learn and practice different paddling strokes as well as how to handle a swamped or capsized canoe. Also covered were procedures for safely getting into and out of the canoe while on the water as an individual boat team and with help from a buddy boat.

(MAY 08) - Food Preparation for the Canoe Trip

The crew assembled to prepare and vacuum pack all of the meals for the 101-mile canoe trip. No cooking beyond boiling water on pack stoves was required on the trip and we ate like kings!
